Organic market: €8bn’s turnover for 2017

The French grow their appetite for organic products.

“In 5 years, the market progressed by 82% between 2011 and 2016, representing a growth of €3.2bn” says Florent Guhl, Director of the Organic Agency (l’Agence Bio). According to the Organic Agency/CSA’s survey released last November, 92% of the French consumed organic products over the last 12 months, ¾ of them did so at least once a month and 16% on a daily basis. While the price may be an issue for some, 4 out of 10 consumers are keen to pay 15% more for an organic product. 80% of consumers buy their organic products from the retail circuit.

On the production side, the number of organic producers in France is also increasing, +13.6% at the end of 2017. While vegetables, field crops and viticulture remain the most important sectors of the organic sector, new areas are developing such as poultry & rabbit (+23.3%) and pig farming (+16.4%). The actors of the organic sector, backed by the French Government, will start working on the Organic Strategy 2022 to further strengthen and develop the sector and address the demand from consumers.
