Proposed EU ban on cage farming

The European Parliament wants the Commission to legislate on the issue of farmed animals. Initiated by a citizens' initiative, this project aims to reduce and end caged farming in the EU by 2027. While this project aims to improve farming conditions and animal welfare in line with societal change, it will require that livestock sector to reinvent itself and make significant investments. Farmers already ask to be compensated and supported in their transition from cages. However, European countries will be able to learn on the experience of some of their neighbours (such as Austria, Germany, Sweden, ...) where cage-free models are already more common. It is expected that the European Commission will by 15 July have made its decision as to whether to start a legislative process to ban caged farming.
